The Derby City Classic, founded and developed by billiards innovator and promoter Greg Sullivan, has been selected as the Best Billiards Event in American History, honoring a tournament that has preserved the traditions of American pool while creating one of the sport’s most prestigious, demanding, and unforgettable annual gatherings.

Sullivan created the Derby City Classic as a modern successor to the legendary Johnston City Hustlers Jamborees of the 1960s and early 1970s. Unlike events devoted to a single game, Derby City requires players to demonstrate a wide range of skills, including shot-making, banking knowledge, cue-ball control, strategic patience, kicking ability, safety play, and competitive endurance.

Players who enter all three major divisions earn points toward the prestigious Master of the Table title. This award recognizes the competitor who performs best across the entire event and represents one of the clearest tests of all-around playing ability in professional pool. The Derby City Classic is also known for its unusual buy-back format. After an initial loss, a player may purchase another opportunity to remain in the tournament. The fields are redrawn after each round, creating unpredictable matchups and allowing amateurs, regional champions, road players, and international professionals to compete in the same arena.

This accessibility has always been central to Sullivan’s vision. He wanted everyday players to have the opportunity to enter major events and face the greatest competitors in the world. The annual Louie Roberts Action and Entertainment Award honors the player who best represents the excitement, personality, and competitive action associated with the event. Sullivan’s creation of the Derby City Classic is part of a broader lifetime of service to pool. As the founder of Diamond Billiard Products, he worked closely with leading players to develop professional-quality equipment and improve tournament playing conditions. His contributions as a manufacturer, innovator, promoter, and supporter of players earned him induction into the Billiard Congress of America Hall of Fame in 2019.
