Nick Varner

Nick Varner has been selected as the Best All-Around Player in American Billiards History, honoring a legendary career defined by extraordinary versatility, championship success and excellence across nearly every major pool discipline.

While many great players have built their reputations around one particular game, Varner became a world-class champion in 9-ball, 8-ball, straight pool, one-pocket and bank pool. His ability to master games requiring completely different skills, strategies and styles of play established him as one of the most complete competitors the sport has ever produced.

Beginning in 1980, Varner accumulated more than 80 professional tournament championships, including eight world championships. He won consecutive U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships in 1989 and 1990 and captured the 1999 WPA World 9-Ball Championship at age 51, becoming the oldest player to win that prestigious title. Known as the “Kentucky Colonel,” Varner combined precise cue-ball control, intelligent pattern play, defensive mastery and remarkable competitive composure.
